From Chris about this image:
Stage harbor lighthouse is one of the many lighthouses on Cape Cod. As you can see, it doesn’t have the light any more as it was decommissioned many moons ago. In fact, it’s privately owned and you can’t want to the lighthouse. There was actually a little party going on (hence the lights on in the house). The foreground is lit up by Chatham Lighthouse (that’s the 2 lights on the ground too), which is a few miles to the north. There was another flashing light just to the right of the frame I had to avoid.
I’ve had this shot in mind for about a year. I wanted to line up the bright part of the Milky Way with the lighthouse so it seemed to come out the top. I used a 35mm lens to try to get the width of the MW and lighthouse to be about the same.
This shot was a little more challenging than I had hoped. My mom decided to come with me. It’s about a 0.8 mile walk on a sandy trail that isn’t exactly easy for someone closing in on 70. At the end of the trail, the mosquitoes were… awful. Since I got us there early to check everything out, we ended up walking back down the trail. I then thought about shooting the Coast Guard lighthouse in Chatham, but that wasn’t happening.
So I literally ran back down the trail to get this shot. In the process I got over 25 bites just on my ankles so that was pleasant. On the upside, I got the shot I wanted and the place to myself. There is a ton of light pollution and marine moisture in the area so unfortunately I didn’t get the MW right down to the top of the stack, but the flag sticks out more which is nice.
I hope you enjoy!
